The nature of the contest was that the overall size of the game had to be no larger than 4kb. I came up with the initial design and the artwork. We had plans for an AI opponent but was scrapped due to the size limitation of the game. An overall really fun project to have worked on. It's on Kongregate so try it out! It's a basic prototype for a bug-eating flower game where you control a gust of wind that helps a hungry flower get to its bugs. Really! I oversaw the art direction while collaborating on the design with the rest of the team. You can find out more about the game at it's Game Jam page. The theme of the contest was the game had to do with the term borderless hence the idea of Nanocell was born. In the game's futuristic fiction, Nanocells are tiny mechanical cells controlled by a remote operator with the purpose of killing cancer cells inside patients. The game however is about survival, not victory. Eventually, the Player will be swamped by the cancer cells; the aggravating feeling of being backed into a corner by the cancer cells and eventually dying. This too is something we wish to convey through the act of playing the game. The reality here is that Nanocell is not about saving lives. Instead, it is about prolonging it as the eventual death message will reveal. The black critters are cancer cells that you must avoid and destroy. White ones on the other hand are friendlies that you can collect. Round ones refill your energy while sharp ones help you with your firepower. But at the cost of more energy. Also becomes incredibly challenging to survive as tougher cancer cells start popping out.. such as the Snake and the Big Bertha that takes several hits to destroy. The page artwork and concept design are done by friend and artist, EKL, while I came up with the initial story and writing. Here is a black and white preview of what's to come in the near future.
