Dangerous Beauty

by t4mk4t in Colored Pencils

This beauty crept into my imagination and held me at my desk, furiously working to capture her grace for over 24 hours total! My goal with this piece was to use light to create interest and focus the viewer's attention on the subject. Next, I would like to try to create a colored pencil drawing without such heavy ink outlines.

Prismacolor pencils, Micron pens and some color correction/ cleanup of the scan in GIMP.

Thank you so much! I tried really hard with the colors on this piece, so I am super glad you think it turned out well! I have been drawing dragons since I first read Anne McCaffrey's "Harper Hall Trilogy" in 7th grade! I started by copying my fave fantasy artists--Greg & Tim Hildebrandt, Micheal Whelan and Jeff Easley, to name a few--and then I began experimenting with combining all those elements in different ways to create my own dragons. I have to admit, however, that I didn't really manage any sort of depth in those drawings until I had taken a couple life-drawing courses...its amazing where we will find inspiration and learning--I think it never stops for us artsy-types! So long as our eyes are open, we are learning things that will later on pop up in our work!

That's sooo true. Inspiration can come from everywhere!! And that is sooo cool!! Tho these past weeks I've been lacking inspiration. (I'm recently gaining it back tho) I'm going to check them artist out!! Hopefully I find inspiration for dragons, cause I really DO want to draw dragons (And weird creatures) for my story projects!

Nice! I find the "Spectrum" series of yearly best-of-fantasy art books to be highly inspiring! Another great is NeonDragonArt--a fellow artist whose tutorials and "how-to" draw books are amazing (http://neondragonart.com/Store/dragonart.html)! For me, my periods of productivity come and go in cycles and I have learned to forgive myself for those periods of creative inactivity...I used to get pretty frustrated with myself when I would get "blocked" but now I take this time as a break where I add more beautiful images to my mental catalog...I call it "restocking the river with fish!"

I need to find that place where I'm not as frustrated when I'm blocked too, cause...I do get pretty frustrated!! :// I need to learn how to be less hard on myself during those times. But, I am getting better at it me thinks! Haha!!

Age....thats all...just putting years of experience on equates to wisdom, I think! ;-) I remember how bad the frustration was when I was a teen but nowadays I really enjoy the ebb and flow of cycles! I take rest and do some mindless work like jigsaw puzzles or playing video games until I feel that tuggin in my brain again! Best of luck to you!

I do hope to get better with the frustration and the art!! And your right, time and age will help with that. And focusing on other stuff to help relax haha. And thanks!!
