Queuing up to order my coffee, I felt a tug on my camera, hanging, as it always does, from my fingers. Turning, I saw this little lad holding the camera by the lens hood. He asked me what it was & let go. I took the shot & showed him it. He squealed with laughter & ran to his mum. I showed her the shot & gave her my card, saying that if she would like a copy, to email me and I would send it. I'm pleased with this, as having come in from outside, I hadn't reset the camera. A hip-shot. He reminds me of an old British Colonial guy I met in Brighton, who I did a series of interviews with, about his life. Born & raised in Kenya, as it is now, worked there in the animal skin trade before & during WW2, then he was posted to Malaya and was captured by the Japanese and sent to work on the Burma Railway. He showed me sketches he made of his time there & paintings he'd done once he was released & home to Kenya. He returned to the Home Country in the late '60s.Inside his home was a visual history of the British Empire, artefacts of all sorts, from the countries where he'd lived. In all, I recorded nearly 12hrs of tape during the time I knew him. The tapes were passed on to Radio Brighton & their Social History dept., and are now part of a Social History museum.
