She is more than 60 years old, and one of the porters at the Badabak Ranger Station, the jump-off to Mt. Pulag via Ambangueg trail. She effortlessly lugged the pack of my teammate on her back, and another porter placed another bag on top of it. It had me worried for a while and asked her if she was okay. She told me that the combined weight of the bags she was carrying was still within the limits the porters were allowed to carry. Indeed, she was able to carry the bags to camp 2, while I was still behind the trail. She was smiling when I finally caught up with her. The porters of Babadak Station charge 500 Philippine pesos for a round trip (about 10 kilometers of rolling terrain) to camp 2. The maximum weight they are allowed to carry is 15 kilos. They charge additional 20 pesos per kilo in excess. With this in mind, they earn roughly 50 pesos per kilometer. A very meager amount. This portrait is my tribute to her.
