Ten years ago there weren't many sites on the internet catering to artists. The ones that did were only using artists to click banners, and pay their bills. As the years progressed, it got worse; Ad space grew to cover and clutter up the pages, reducing the quality of the sites themselves.
Now, vendors and "art-sites" make profit from their artists without returning anything to them at all. Contests are created solely for the interest of the site and its chosen few 'best' artists. Contests are created just so that artists can receive commissions, with no pay-out at all.
Shadowness was created in order to put an end to that. Gone are the days of corporate sites with no community, that don't care about the art and the artist. Shadowness is here to give back!
To Empower and Educate artists, creating a place to share artwork and connect with a network of diverse talents. To provide a free and individually customizable environment that is and user-friendly and distraction-free.
We want to revolutionize the industry. We will not accept the industry standard of taking money from our artists without giving back to the community. We aren't here for the profit. We're here to give back to the Shadowness community. All monies collected by Shadowness via subscription or donation will go towards contests to pay back the hard work of the community artists.
The Shadowness Staff, including the founder are determined to be friendly and down to earth. We will encourage constructive criticism and ensure that our experience and vision are passed on to SN Members by our exemplary conduct.
We are determined to view each piece of artwork and comment on a majority of them. The Shadowness Staff will focus on constructive and conversational feedback by encouraging replies and encouraging the viewing of outstanding artists and their work.
We have Facebook Connect and Likes implemented for our Members to allow easier and more global sharing. We also offer Twitter Connect. The Shadowness platform will remain extremely open. Instead of becoming ‘just another social networking site’ we will strive to become the best art-oriented site on the internet by encouraging members to connect socially off-site using Facebook, so that even Non members can share the great artwork on Shadowness with their family and friends.
Here’s How We Plan To Give Back To The Community!
- We will hire freelance within the Shadowness community for our needs, including, but not limited to: Contest logos, Shadowness version Logos, custom wallpapers and other artwork needs as they arise.
- We will build a commission system that handles transactions made between members or outside buyers for Shadowness artists. The artists will gain everything, unlike other sites which only pay artists a small percentage, we will take a small transaction fee, in order to pay our expense, and the artist will make over 90% of his/her sale.
- We will take no profit from Prints, we will only pay the expenses of shipping and print creation from qualified ICC profiled print shops. You’ll get what you pay for, rather than paying for the Shadowness name and getting sub-standard prints.
- We will hold contests wherein there will be several categories and many more prizes than the usual 1st-3rd places. 30-50% of all participants will be winners. We hope to encourage all levels of participants regardless of their skill level and focus on promoting a platform abundant in collaborations and creative thinking. All monies collected from subscriptions and donations will be applied to contests after the Shadowness bills have been paid.
This is the promise that we make to the Members of Shadowness. We promise to deliver a fun place to learn, full of intense artworks and open, caring members who are as interested in spreading the knowledge and love of art as we are!
once again, yaay for SN, and hopefully as time goes by we *not just founder and staff* can keep SN promises to all of members here, that this community will make everyof its member become better artist :D Hooraah!
Keep it up everyone! Shadowness is without doubt the place to be. It's amazing how quickly the numbers of visitors on the site has grown within the brief time S9 has been up and needless to say we're very happy about that! Meng has done a tremendous work and i think i speak for everyone when i say bloodi well done lad.
Wow. Just. Wow! I literally said that out loud, while reading this alone in my room. 90% of the profits for us? That is beyond awesome. Oh shi-, I'm crying of happiness here, now. :,)
I finally found a new e-home. I believe I'm not the only one feeling this way. ♥ Thank you, thank you, thank you! *hugs*
Daniel [Chinastone] brought me here and it was the coolest breath of fresh air I could have felt.
The community here is wonderful, I was so well received. The site is like a paradox regarding other art sites. Totally loving it. I am available to share everything I have learnt about photography with such a community.
This could very well be the brightest corner of shadowland.^^
I really enjoyed reading this page and I hope that as this site gets bigger you are still able to meet these goals! So far I am loving it here - the people are amazing - I haven't seen one nasty comment, childish act or tasteless art. Very well done - and I'm glad that Damien-c told me about this place!
I found this site through Heliwidis. I was becoming bored and cynical with other sites, this one feels right and I'm happy to see so many friends here. I'm working on getting more friends to move to the shadows :D
I have only been using a dslr for a little under a year now. And so far, my experiences with the other so called communities, really hasn't been great. Maybe this site is different, time will tell. I hope so. If so, then I'm here to stay...:)
shadowness is like a breath of fresh air in a room full of stale cigar smoke. i've spent the last five years on the ''other guys'' site and watched it become less and less about the art and more and more about pinching every dime out of the community possible.
i wasn't one of the people that got into a tizzy and deleted my account for the simple fact that i spent a LOT of time working on that portfolio and i was really proud of it. but my frustration has grown to the point where i don't even go to the site any more.
to the 'powers that be' here at shadowness, i'd like to offer my undying gratitude for creating a place where the art and the artist are the most important things, not getting paid.
if there's anything i can do to help develop the community and/or the user interface feel free to contact me. in the meantime, i'll be uploading and commenting like mad. because that's how i've found that i get the most out of art in all its forms.
ajm, I'm very appreciative of your kind words and support. We are hard at work on the articles and the group features. We will soon launch a community effort to bring about the best guidelines and quality-driven platform for artists to share their knowledge of art. Anyone who feel enticed to help will be able to do so in the most meaningful way. At least, that's my hope. :)
I'm so happy that SN is back and kicking! I remember coming even from time to time when it seemed to be dead and out of sudden is filled with great people again. You can breath some fresh air here now and that's refreshing, since in most art-networking sites the atmosphere is so stuffy nowadays at times!
Its future sounds very good! I'm looking forward to it! ♥
I Shadowness! Really, the day I joined...the day all the inspiration that was once dead in me came rushing back. I love being here and interacting with the many talented artists, and the Daily Inspiration Feature allows everyone to get exposure, I may not have been one to look at certain art styles before but I find I've just been looking at everything.
I feel at home and that reminds me of one of my favourite quotes - "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home" - Twyla Tharp :)
I am delighted to hear about the mission, and I think it sounds wonderful. If you guys need any additional help I'd be more than glad to help out. ♥
I joined this community 8 years ago...or was it 9? Either way, I've always loved this community more than any other I've been apart of, and always come back here. The people are more willing to help, the staff is not only skilled artists but friendly people who will help you in any way that you need. Shadowness will always remain #1 because of it's community.
I've posted a few places in the web, always been very cautious about where I post. I only recently found out about Shadowness, but I'm glad I did. I rally like this place the best so far. It's a breath of fresh air among sites that have lost their way, and their purpose.
Thus far, this place is like heaven! A little over whelming at first, due to all the fantastic art, but everyone here is so friendly; I don't feel less of myself and my talent compared to other artists... which is a feeling I would often get while on DeviantArt, as we are all constantly fighting for popularity and thus compared to each other. ♥
Thank you guys for your valued support. We really don't see this as a business in its conventional term, but as a way to support and promote the deserving artists. The more we grow, the more we can give back to the community. This is only a start! :)
First, I would like to thank everybody here in Shadowness my deepest gratitude for such a warm welcome given to me. Honestly, I never felt this before on other art community. The ambience is more like a sanctuary for me. It's my second day here and I find it so addictive.
More power to Shadowness and now I will proclaim that this will be the home of Darkzide Demigod.
Cheers to All!
I'm a member of a number of "portfolio" sites. 95% I cant stand due to 1) people being extremely stuck up 2) peoples heads up their arses 3) lying re work 4) immature/unprofessional comments on commercial works 5) Teens thinking they are Frank Frazetta - need I go on?
So its extremely nice to come on a site that doesn't have all of the above. Everyone is friendly and supportive. Keep up the great work!
I've only been here for less than a day and I already love it here. At first I was hesitant to join but the sleek site design peaked my interest. Now that I'm here, I've seen the error of my ways. The support and the warm welcome is much appreciated. I honestly love the personal touches the staff has with rest of us. ♥
Ive been on DeviantArt for 4 years and have only watched it go downhill. Now its so impersonal, and you have to be part of the "in" crowd to be seen there. After over 300 vector postings (not even counting my photography), tons of articles, journal features, and countless hours of trying to help others there, I still am not even considered a senior member. In a week here, I already feel like I'm a part of a community, and feel welcomed. I agree with your mission statements and goals, and will help in any way I can to make this a successful venture!
rjonesdesign, we're really happy to have you here! Wow, 300+ posts. That's rather impressive. We definitely want to make our members feel welcomed and rewarded for their contributions. That's why we go to great lengths in visiting, featuring, exchanging messages and helping our artists every single day. :)
When i joining on SN, i feel immediately the friendly feeling that is so hard in other site!
Anyway, i really love how ALL art is appreciated, without polemics and more....
I rerally like this art-community, and i hope grow a lot with another amazing artists!
Have I ever mentioned how much I Shadowness??...maybe about 10 times so far :D
I really look forward to seeing all of these changes take place and will give my full support and help out however I can :) with cupcakes for those who are hard at work
I just joined last night, but shadowness is already in my heart considering I have had a really warm welcome, feedback given to me, and the SN is about the art and not about other things like on....
Keep up the good work and thank you ever so much!
First of all thank you for making a great platform for us artists...this was really needed. Secondly, I am inspired by the art and the words depicted here, I mean moved ...really! I will try and bring in my fellow frnz from my locations to Shadowness, One thing caught my eyes, ...you guys need a logo/Icon maker, ? sure, any time, Since childhood that was one thing I never stopped doing, I am very passionate for logo designing...just let me know n i'll be at your service. Cheers (...Damn why was I not here before 2011... I mean...what a waste of time I did?!..)
This site has been a great discovery. I'm revising my oldest works and working on new fresh stuff, before uploading anything. The quality of the portafolios is outstanding and I'm glad that's your premise. I have also been a part of other "art" sites, but in some of them, art seems to be the least important, ironically. I am planning to stay here :)
Long live Shadowness! I remember this site before there were even memberships and it would just be some random blog posts or some of Meng's mind blowing wallpaper. Thats the artwork that made the Shadowness name and Meng is the brilliance behind it all. He has single handedly directed the creation of the perfect art community, which the world so badly needs. Thank you for making this version of Shadowness simply perfect, I couldn't dream of a way you could have done it better.
*staring quietly in awe*... I have a loooong way to go to get anywhere near the amazing quality of art on display here - at least I'll be learning in the most spectacular enviroment possible. Thanks for letting me sneak in.
A very refreshing POV..."We promise to deliver a fun place to learn, full of intense artworks and open, caring members who are as interested in spreading the knowledge and love of art as we are!"
Decided to subscribe within 48hours of finding the site, amazing works, and very amazing people make this the kind of place i want to be. Highly recommended for any serious artist in need of a portfolio.
