In celebration of our new tag /still-life since a little while ago I decided to make a feature and tell a little bit what still life is for those who don't know. For those of you who do know, you can always refresh or just scroll down to the art!
What is still life?
First off, any art medium can create still lifes. A still life is a work of inanimate objects arranged a specific way, usually flowers, food, bottles and wine glasses on a flat surface. Despite popular misconceptions, there can also be things like birds, mice and other animals in the image BUT for it to be still life they cannot be the main focus of the image. What is it about?
A still life is about light, colour, forms/textures and composition (which the artist change and set). It's more about the artist's own ideas rather than capturing what already exists (without changing it) like landscapes. Most known still lifes today
Right now I think the most common still lifes which we see everywhere, on TV, on the Internet, when we're out... is pictures of food. You might not think of it first, but that's still life too. A cookbook is a fantastic example of 21st century still life works. I highly recommend to flip through one (or two or more) good cookbooks to get a sense of composition, light and use of colours. :)Enjoy some high class still lifes from SN members
