Dr. Jose P. Rizal is one of the greatest Filipinos who ever lived. At a time when the Philippine Islands was under the oppressive rule of the Spaniards, his brilliance and dedication to his country served as inspiration for the discontent masses to fight for their homeland's independence. His writings, particularly the Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were viewed as the guiding force for other patriots to rally for the country’s cause. "The pen is mightier than the sword," was his explanation for his aversion to a bloody revolution. He's also an artist. He draw and did some paintings. Here are some of his original sketches http://dennisvillegas.blogspot.com/2011/06/rizals-self-portrait-circa-early-1880s.html.
The story behind those slipper is about the young Pepe, as Jose Rizal is known to be called, after losing one of his slippers as he was riding a boat, was said to throw his remaining slippers into the waters. At such a young age, he was said to reason that his remaining slipper, without the other pair, is no use to him. Someone who might be able to pick both slippers will be able to use the pair of slippers well.
