There have been some interesting animated films as of late:

    Tekkon Kinkreet - Studio 4c
    Amazing Nuts! - Studio 4c
Aachi + Sipak - a korean production, forget the name
    Freedom OVA - Katsuhiro Otomo
    Ratatouille - Pixar
Paprika - Satoshi Kon + Madhouse

On and there's word going on about another Miyazaki flick.

According to a classmate of mine, she says Ratatouille was awesome.

There are some music vids from Amazing nuts up on Youtube, and some full versions of the shorts. The 3D ones weren't as well made as the 2D ones. Global Astroliner and Kungfu Love are possible future Studio 4c productions, assuming there's enough money and interest in those two.

Aachi + Sipak has an interesting concept of the world being powered on dung, and how there are people who are awarded with blue popsicles for .. contributing to the cause. It's not the best plot, but the technical animation is pretty interesting seeing that it was done traditional style on flash with some 3d backgrounds here and there.

Freedom OVA, I haven't seen too much of it, but it's a 3D cellshade style. It's scarily close to Otomo's character designs but the animation movement is lacking in some places IMO. Story I hear was solid.

Tekkon Kinkreet is a joint production between a European director and Studio 4c, I hear mixed reviews on that but I'd watch it just for the technical stuff.

Paprika is like watching Paranoia Agent on steroids, the story's pretty solid through the first half and then it starts stretching the limits of plot belivability/credibility on you. The premise is about a psychologist using newly developed technology to treat patients via their dreams. She assumes a seperate personality while doing so, and calls it "Paprika".

is this more like art-related films or just any movie we can get by at the theater/rental?

well I was thinking more artsy films, less mainstream. indie films, shorts, docs, classics, and some anime. elements of graphic design in film could also be discussed. So yes, I suppose some theatre/rental stuff, but I want to share my love for cinematography, and I think it will relate to photography and this site. does that sound good?
