“Mananabas” (The Reaper) takes off on the story of vigilante groups in
Mindanao, in the Southern Philippines. These groups--organized, funded, and
armed by the military (some say with CIA backing)--go about on loosely
defined missions, engaging the Muslim and Communist insurgency. Along with
military training and discipline, they often cloak themselves in mysticism,
a mishmash of folk and Christian rituals. Their bodies are tattooed with
magic symbols and demonic faces to protect them from harm, and they chant
long and involved prayers of unintelligible near-Latin. They claim to be
able to levitate on holy days, when their powers are strongest, and they
drink an oil that is said to give them superhuman speed and strength.
