Sheep are everywhere..... it looks very cute... but it is the result of a very sad history... after the battle at Culloden more, l746, where Bonny Prince Charley was defeated by the government... the clearencies began in late 18th and 19th century. The Clan chiefs forbid the crofters to farm on the landscapes of the Highlands as the Clan chiefs got much more money by the southern sheep farmers, farming the sheep on the scottish Highlands. The clearencies of these crofters began. The crafters had no other choice than to immigrate to Canada, Nova Scotia, Australia. Still now the abandoned and ruined homes of the former crofters are to see....
the sheep live almost in wilderness, often even no fences and we met a mother sheep feeding her baby on the middle of the road... twice in a year the farmer go out to gather their sheep for the shearing...

thank you Jürgen !! but i don't think the story is nice... it is one of the really sad stories of the whole Highlands.... even the Islands were involved by the clearencies.... Families who farmed for generations on the Highlands and were absolutely loyal to their Clan chiefs, they lived as big families... the chiefs let them fall because of the richer sheep farmers and made them suffer to death. Many who immigrated also died either by sailing or in the new world...
Jul 29th ReplyNow Scotlands Highlands are kind of monotone, abandoned sheep farming... the crofters were crop farmers....
i have been in the Highlands for the 3th time, and it touches me each time i am there
