Recently I've been taking a closer look at the user portfolios, the latest addition being the slideshow and the custom headers. The former's still being worked on, 7shadows had already noted that the first image has been skipped.
The custom header was a nice touch. Of course, some parts may be obscured to make room for the SN logo and the menu, nothing too intrusive. I have no idea what the Change Look function will do yet or if it involves crazy rearranging of the actual layout, but it'll certainly be something to see in the next while.
Just noticed one tiny thing. You could use html in your posts...
I got no idea how this will turn out, I mean what if someone uploads this GINORMOUS screencap that skews the entire layout? I suppose I could give it a try:
Well well, what do you know... It does to a certain degree where it adds more space to the right, not so good for small monitors I suppose.
However with the screencap in mind I'd also like to point out a couple suggestions for the Edit Portfolio section.
1. There could be a small note beside the "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" field that says it has a max of 50 characters,.
2. The "Preview of your Portfolio" might need a hardline above it just so users can tell where the editing section ends. Or even better, maybe it could be toggled from the preview button!
Going back into the albums, it took me a while to notice anything a user uploads are all arranged in the same way, this also includes journals.
The fact you HAVE to upload an image to a journal before typing and submitting implies that casual bloggers will encounter difficulties in just writing text based entries. This will not be a problem if users end up uploading webcam pics or even random images from their harddrives, assuming they'd go through the bit of trouble to do so all the time. But what if the submission process was reversed for just the Journals section where you upload the text first and an image later?
Then again it's kinda pointless, I digress. There are plenty of other blogging sites where users can do just that fine.
However! A system like this I think is perfect for tutorials and sketch blogs! This is a portfolio-based community after all, and it can encourage users to learn from each other.
Before I forget, I wonder if it might be redundant and more complicated for users to have sub-albums....?
..... Probably. We'll see what happens.
I'll be waiting on the chance to test out editing album names and all that next time.
What I'd LOVE to see is a little java field that pops up with the names of current album sections while submitting posts, kinda like Blogger or Gmail [in terms of writing email addresses].
It was nice to be able to navigate a user's profile and album sections on the fly in the left menu. I wonder if it might be easier for users to have the ART / PHOTOS / JOURNAL icons beside the album names that correspond to those categories?
Something to chew on for now...... Till next time!
