A depiction of the events at the Battle of Monmouth during the American Revolution. The left hand side depicts the dressing down George Washington gave General Lee, who he had ordered to lead the battle and who decided not to attack. The troops leaving the battlefield without a fight enraged Washington to the point that he was said to have cursed the heck out of his general and to relieve him, and then take command of the army, himself. It was said his dressing down was so bad, that it shook the leaves on the trees, so I went with them actually being shaken off as a visual. Washington then leads the battle, in front, heedless of his own life and survives without being hit, even though under fire by British sharpshooters. One of the many times this happened during his life. The heat was so intense, over 100 degrees that day, many died simply from heat stroke, so I wanted to show the intensity in the sweat on these men, especially dressed in what they had to wear back then. Many have removed their coats, etc. My previous attempt at painting George Washington I've grown to dislike. I was very mediocre in getting proportions and details correct, especially on his horse. I welcomed the challenge to redeem myself here and to paint him properly with all reverence and skill that I could. I've learned a lot doing retexturing of games over the past year and incorporated some of that in painting/blending realistic materials to make items like clothing and such pop. Painted entirely in Photoshop. Painted in Photoshop. Used some texture filtering in spots, but mostly just painted with the regular brushes. The actual contest file was so huge, my poor years old Macbook Pro was taxed way beyond its limits. It took about seven minutes to save the file, took minutes sometimes to display zoomed in. It was pretty crazy. I was up two days straight working near the end. The system finally crashed when I added the rain layers less than 2 hours before the contest ended. I was pretty frazzled, but luckily, I booted it back up and was able to recreate the effects in time. I pushed detail levels beyond probably anything else I've made, and I learned a lot of things, so it was all worth it. The main thing is, i finished it in time, minus a couple of things I wanted to add. I further revised and cleaned up the mix from the tribute flash I did of the painting for my dad last Christmas, so it finally sounds like I had it in my head. She wanted her depicted with Kain and Raziel in battle/with their swords out, so I came up with this. I last depicted Kain and Raziel in his wraith form in a more hybrid illustrated/painterly style. Back with Kain's Lament, I went with more straight painterly. It's been a long time and my style and what I'm growing to like has changed. I really went for as detailed as I could get this time. I need to get both faster with this technique and more efficient in general. It took many moons. Too many. I'm also switching off onto another painting I was doing before asked to do this. So, I'm thinking that this is sort of Kain making sure Raziel teaches his new fledgling the right way. Today's lesson, how to feed properly. As you can see, Rion's a little overzealous, lol I imagined Kain saying in this moment: "Take control of your pet, Raziel. Teach her the proper way to feed." Majinkura's notes were that Kain barely tolerates her, heh There are a lot of little details to spot for the die-hard fan (as always). I hope you enjoy Photoshop with Wacom Tablet. Oh, this was the first time ever drawing Lieutenant Raziel. I've always been meaning to do so, so that's a plus. This is painted entirely in Photoshop, with minor tweaking in After Effects at the end. I looked at pics of the new Lara from the screenshots and concept art, but only as reference. I mostly wanted to paint her using my own head. Things like the detail on the holster and such, and on her, though, I wanted to be as correct as possible. It winds up being a hybrid between the game screens, the FMV, and the concept art. It did take longer to initially get the pose right. I have a slightly harder time drawing women than men... Overall, I'm very happy with the way it turned out. First time drawing/painting Lara in any form, much less this new version of her so this was fun. I was thinking about doing something for it, then I had other things I had to do. However, on February 20th, two days before the competition ended, I had this notion. I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it by then -- not even close -- but it was a fun concept and I liked how I had it pictured in my head, so I decided I'd go ahead and do it anyway. This is a piece I did for my father for Christmas. One of his and my favorite historical individuals, George Washington. I wanted to depict him in a truly epic way. I first had the idea of depicting him as he was as a colonel in the French/American Indian war, as that is where the most famous of instances with him being shot at and surviving unscathed. Well, then there was this time the British sharpshooter had him in his sights when he was a General in the American Revolution, but he just felt the need to drop his weapon... At any rate, as a colonel, he was ordered to deliver a message by horseback across the battlefield to his acting general. He did so, but not before surviving two horses shot out from under him and three bullet holes through his clothes -- two through his coat and one through his hat! Needless to say, that's quite the image of a man having his horse shot out from under him and his clothes riddled with bullets, yet still he doesn't waver, presses ever forward. I liked the uniform probably better from his colonel days, being an awesome red and blue. But, ultimately, I decided to meld that in with this showing him in his General regalia, leading his men in the Revolution, instead. So, it's a piece more depicting the seminal character and symbol of George Washington now than any one particular event. I viewed his portraits for reference and the life-sized recreations of him based on all evidence available at Mount Vernon, so that is why he doesn't look like the guy you see on the One Dollar Bill. He was pretty ruggedly handsome and tall, actually. Painted in Photoshop. I used this painting in an animated flash/mov, and also wrote an entire march for him. The character is not mine. Members of an online group that has created their own comic characters, or heros, held a contest on DA last year with the launch of the DC Universe Online game, which they adapted their characters to role play as in the game. This is one of the few I saw that were like The Flash. I enjoyed the Celtic heritage proclaimed, heh. Painted in Photoshop. Tue, 08 Nov 2011 21:42:25 -0500
