Pariban is the daughter of my uncle (the brother of my mother not my father), which i may marry her even without dating her at the first. Its a special relationship in bataknese culture. We bataknese man only may marry a bataknese woman if she is our...Apr 11th
She is beautiful Mara! You are beautiful together. So she is your 2nd cousin..right? I was wondeing if she was in another bataknese clan..it is still acceptable to marry her right? Thee have been mariages that I have heard of from your culture that if 1 is bataknese and the other is of another ethnic culture such as javanese or sundanese,it would be okay, but he/she would have to adopt one of the Bataknese clans...is this so?Apr 11th
WOW!! i am totally surprised MrsHDixon!! i didnt know you knew some of Indonesian culture!! i am so happy to know that you already knew some of my culture... ^_^
so let me explain here a little bit :
in bataknese culture we have family names (a lot of them) thats what you said as the "clans", in Indonesian language we us the word "Marga" that means family name. My family name/marga (or clan) is SIREGAR. My pariban is TAMBUNAN. The aunt on the Aunt & niece series is HASIBUAN. the niece is "HUTABARAT". In bataknese culture the children follows the fathers Family name (not the mother). because in our culture man are the ones who brings the family lineage, not woman. so if a bataknese man doesnt have any son, than his family lineage ends at him.
My mother is TAMBUNAN. which i may marry any woman (of course in the range of my age) that comes from the TAMBUNAN family. but for The Aunt Silvia , i cant marry her because she is the daughter of my father's sister (well she was married to a man from the HASIBUAN family), thats why i dont cal her pariban, but i call her "iboto" which means female cousin, and for male cousin i call "Lae". we are "extremely"-forbidden to marry non-pariban bataknese woman.
if we marry a non-bataknese woman, lets say from another ethnic like sundanese, javenese, manadonese, etc, we usually make a deal between the man & woman's families, we make an agreement for the wife follows his husband's culture (adopting the bataknese culture). thats when a non-bataknese woman will be given a bataknese family name/marga/clan. of course the woman must pay a certain requirements, such as giving a buffalo for the family that gave her a bataknese family name, but not always a buffalo.
so MrsHDixon, you are really right about when a bataknese man gets married to a non-bataknese woman. 3 cheers for you my dear friend.
anyway how did you know it? ^_^
