Both versions are very similar to me. Love this photo and how it's composed. The water mists make this pretty cool... but I personally think it lacks a bit of contrast overall. Possibly because of the grey areas.
Never really liked the wider crop except being a panorama to begin with. But set that aside. This one is less crowded, gives you more room to breathe and focus on the focal point.

Well, if I crank up the contrast any more, it will get all burnt out =P I could perhaps try some dodging and burning in some areas on the rock =)

I try to keep to square, or the orginal 3:2 format, but sometimes a crop looks right for it's purpose =)
