Gorgona by KaterinaArt

by KaterinaArt in Fantasy

Color pencil painting , 11 x 8.5 (21.5 x 27.9cm) 2013
Inspired by one of my favorite Greek folklore stories
of Alexander's the Great Gorgona (mermaid)
asking sailors one question: "Is King Alexander alive?"
If the answer was no she would stir up storms doom ships and every sailor on board

Model Reference :

Original and prints available on my website

This is very special to me
one of my favorite mermaid stories my grandmother in Greece used to share with me
when i was little and loved it many theories and stories surround this gorgona
love to illustrate more about this story

Wow, this one is just unbelievably gorgeous!! I love everything about this piece; I love the mermaid's expression, her make up, the pearls in her hair, her necklace and her golden tail. The fact that you achieved all this with just colored pencils makes me admire this artwork even more P.S. love your new avatar, you look so very pretty and you have such beautiful hair!

Very beautiful, Kat!! I love the golden feel of the piece and the piercing gaze of the Gorgon! Makes me feel like a stunned sailor myself! ♥ I wonder, how long does it take you to do a piece this large? I find that colored pencil takes me an awfully long time and I am wondering if that is *ahem* a "normal" ;-)

thank you so much Tamara ♥ same here when i do color pencilwork myy hand really feels it's very time consuming medium but rewarding too ,i feel you can get in so many details than using paint,,, this i had started it maybe a month ago and did basic layering mostly the background i knew i had my work cut out for this , and put it aside to finish other artworks when i came back to it took me several days ( 3-4 ) to finish usually like to keep count and lose track of it once i begin work..lol.but i love working on colored paper speeds up work a bit :)

Colored paper! Thats brilliant--I will have to tuck that into my bag of tricks for later! ;-) I am glad to hear it takes a while for you to complete CP works as well! The layering is insane--most of my pieces have upwards of 25 individual colors in them and probably that many layers! I will agree with the detail level, however! I also recently discovered how useful erasing a section and beginning again is--I don't think I was brave enough to try until the Crow drawing! XD
