The abundance of colour and looseness in definition stand in clear contrast of one another. It's a quality that flows throughout your entire Missing Children series, conveying frailty and underlying defiance.
I am learning a lot through your paintings and techniques.
Okay, after the five tangible elements of painting, (drawing, value, color, edge and texture) I am officially identifying a further additional element: Physical Delivery.
Physical delivery is the velocity, delicacy, or forcefulness of application.
This last element is kind of a "bonus round", more applicable to mediums where physical delivery has more presence. So in the case of oils, yes, it is entirely necessary, otherwise it's kind of shameful for not exploring the medium's potentials. Sumi-e too. Just look at /azrael-nekhbet 's paintings. I think content matters too. For more illustrative work, physical delivery might not play that important of a role. But I like to think beyond that style or mode of expression.
That's another very interesting conversation.
Thanks to both of you.
Snowmask you have always such a good eye on feeling and seeing things in art, and you write your thinks so well.
JP thanks a lot for your art and for sharing your feelings and experience.

When we can break painting down, there are only FIVE tangible elements that appear on our canvas:
May 14th, 2011 Reply1. Drawing /placement (Defined as either linear drawing or use of masses)
2. Value (Defined as the Range of light to dark shading).
3. Color (Defined as the range from purity of color to subdued, grayed down color. Also warm and cool variations).
4. Edges (Defined as Outline, hard-edge, soft-edge, lost edge, broken edge, bleeding edge, jagged edge or carved edge).
5. Texture (Defined as thin wash, all the way up to thick palette knife painting).
A Physical element is: Velocity of application (Defined as how rapidly or slowly the paint is applied).
That's it.
That is all that we use to convey our painting to our viewer.
Everything else such as "concept", "emotion," "message" all happen in the viewer's brian, and possibly in the viewer's heart.

Out of all 5 elements, I feel I am weakest in understanding value. This comes from my poor grasp of lighting.
May 14th, 2011 Reply katherine-cheng.comI am trying to get my brain around (through using oils) that I am not painting stuff, I am painting the effect that light plays on stuff.
Do you have advice to share on painting in large scale?
JPThornton
Keep photographing it in progress and viewing it in a reduced format. ...And have Fun!!
