We have a ground squirrel that keeps visiting the seed bowl on the ground for the doves and visiting winter birds. That squirrel is getting fatter and fatter, and if his speed slows down in proportion to his weight he will soon make a very satisfying meal for the returning hawks.. One of these days he will no longer fit into his burrow or he will get stuck.
I do not know what he will do in the nesting season when the hawks and owls pick of anything that moves! :yes Nature will take its course.
