This was taken in Jigokudani (Hell Valley) Monkey Park - January 3, 2011.
A troop of monkeys live in this conservation area and are now quite accustomed to taking baths and having humans around. Typical monkey safety rules apply such as no feeding, don't carry bags or handbags (camera bags are ok) and don't make prolonged eye contact with the monkeys. However you can look at them through your camera and they don't take it as a sign of aggression. Funny little creatures...

Yea animals are funny with eye contact. It takes some time & trust to develope or you could be lunch or tommorrows news! I saw this area on a show on MHZ. It was quite interesting. He kinda looks like don't distrub me I'm re laxin! LOL Great catch HD!

They will generally let you get to a certain distance before they move away. They aren't interested in camera bags but will become aggressive if you are carrying a shopping bag. Cheeky little monkeys!

I didnt knew that there are such safety rules when you contact with mnkeys. Pretty scary. You were brave :P Good portrait. Reminds me of people in some spa or something. ;)

Yup...lots of safety rules when dealing with the little critters. But generally they leave the people alone.

Love the focus here and how the monkey (especially the pink of the face) pops out from the surroundings. ^^

Thank you! Just like people their faces get a little redder than usual if they are in the bath for a long time.

How nice to see the Japanese macaques! I lived not too far from Jigokudani Onsen, and am very familiar with the famous hot spring bathers. ^^ You captured the look of "Ahhhh~
" perfectly!

I head up there at least once a year....can never have enough "monkeys in the bath" shots!

Yes, the babies are so cute, too.
Jul 22nd, 2011 ReplyHillbillyDeluxe
I have a ton of baby shots but they are really shy and hard to make eye contact with. I only know of Jigokudani. Do you know any other places in 長野県 with monkeys in a semi natural environment?
Jul 22nd, 2011 Reply C'mon Pookie...AruarianDancer
I am not aware of any other places within 長野県 with ニホンザル that are not too afraid of humans. ^^; These guys can be as bad as the deer in Nara Park. XD You're distracted one moment and there goes your lunch, glasses, purse... lol

These monkeys and the ones on Miyajima (near Hiroshima) like to snatch vinyl bags. They never even tried for my camera bag. The deer in Nara are a completely different story!
