Leszy was an unfriendly Slavic demon. He wandered through the woods, seeking people whom he could make lose their way. He was a lord of forest animals. It was easier to hear him than see him - he whistled, sang, laughed. In some regions, he was supposed to have a wife, called lesawica or Baba Yaga, and even children - leszanki.
He dressed like a forester and sometimes changed into a hare, a wolf, an eagle owl.
To avoid meeting him, you ought to turn your clothes outside in, and if you did see him, you could still save yourself by making him laugh. Sometimes people gave leszy offerings - bread, salt, sweets. Most often, these demons were the spirits of hermits or people who suddenly died in a forest.
