This image was inspired by the Miracle of Amersfoort, the main theme for the exhibition I took part in today.

The story is about a poor woman who comes to Amersfoort to join the convent, out of shame she ditches her cheap statue of lady Mary into the river. Years later the statue is resurfaces, and it is infused with miracles.

It's a classic Christian tale of miracles, but the story did infuse my fantasy with imagery. In my own belief, the virgin Mary is the western continuation of the Earth Goddess who is present in so many cultures and beliefs. So I stripped the virgin Mary from her western form and replaced it with a more ancient and natural form, rising from the water being all miraculous.

The model photo was take by Michel van der Linden, who allowed me the use of the image, for this composition. It came by me just at the right moment and was exactly what I needed for this image, which is a miracle by itself.
