Diane - Alien Girl
Older work (very old one!)

This one is a painted version of my AlienGirl character .
It has been done in photoshop, I had used custom brushes made out of photos, I'm not really happy with it... I might edit it someday :)

refs : http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/9173/millepertuis4yh.jpg and http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/3748/refzzz2gx.jpg

Photoshop CS, wacom intuos 3A4, about 60 hours.

Diane - Would you be my Valentine?
This one may be the most time consuming piece I've ever done :p (and I don't think that I'll do it again, I had started to hate it in the end ^^)
This is part of a serie I'm doing with my best friend about celebrations (Christmas, Valentine's day, etc....), this is actually the first painting of the serie. She's doing the 2nd one, then I'll do the 3rd, etc...

It's about some persons who can harm people who love them then and being lonely and cold, searching for a heart to take, blinded by they feelings, trying to "hunt" for a "love prey"... Dunno if it's very clear...

The tree is a human hearts tree (that may be a little bit erm... gross, I don't know... I just felt like painting real hearts so here's the result ^^).
The peacock feathers symbolise pride and also bad luck. The eyes... well, she's blind ^^
The snow leopard is meant to symbolise her "hunter" behaviour (now blind aswell), the fact that she's sitting on a tree is meant to represent how lonely she feels (and it's also a nice place to search for hearts, remember )

I know that she's breathing against the wind, but making breath right looked wrong so I'm gonna call this thingie "artistic freedom".
The lighting is typical flat snowy weather lighting so there's not a lot of volume.

Photoshop CS and my beloved wacom
50 hours approx.
Ref used for the body and I've taken a look at some snow leopard shots (google is my friend!) to remember how they look like.
No refs for the fabric so it's totally off but I don't really care since this image is not intended to be realistic (I've never seen a heart tree )
I don't know what else to say... I hope you'll enjoy this image, feel free to crit :)
Thanks for viewing!
Thanks a lot to everybody who has helped me in the WIP thread :)

I definately have an issue with web optimised jpg.... it destroys the colourscheme, contrast and volume :( My painting looks flaaaaat (it had not a lot of volume due to the dull lighting, but the jpg version is totally flat!)

Diane - How to make a blinking avatar
Do you have adobe image ready?
if so :

1 - open the image you want to use as an avatar in photoshop. Save it for the web. Name it 1

2 - create a new layer, draw eyelids (not totally closed) then save it for the web. Name it 2

3 - draw totally closed eyelids, save it for the web. Name it 3.

You should now have 3 different avatars : one with open eyes, another with not totally closed eyes and another with totally closed eyes.

4 - Open them in image ready, create a new file (same size as you want your avatar to be)
Drag and drop all the avatars on it (they'll appear on different layers).

There is a time control bar (with frames, etc) where you can choose to add a new frame.

5 - On this time control bar : create 3 new frames (you now should have 4)
In the first one, hide all the layers except the one where the eyes are wide open. In the second one, hide all except for the one with closed eyes. In the 3rd one, hide all the layers except the ones with nearly closed eyes and in the last one hide all except the one with open ones.

6 - Now you can set the time you want to assign to each frame : choose 5 seconds for the 1st one, 0 for the 2nd one, 0 for the 3rd one and 1 for the last one.

7 - Now you can save an optimised animated gif file :) IT'S DONE!!!

The image displayed shows how yours should look like if you've followed the steps.

Diane - Slippery went wet
Hi everybody!
This is a collab with Aaron aka seeThrou : http://seethrou.deviantart.com/

His original drawing can be found here : http://seethrou.gfxartist.com/artworks/125386
It has been very fun to paint though I had stopped working on it for a very long time (I had started it some months ago and just finished it today)... I'm sorry for being so late Aaron ;)

Photoshop CS and my wacom,
25 hours approx

Thanks Aaron for this collab, it has been very fun and challenging :)

I hope you'll like it, feel free to crit ;)

The colours may look too light or not saturated enough, I've tried to calibrate my monitor LOTS of time, but it doesn't seem to work well :(

The closeup contains "explicit" stuff (the little sleeping thingie is nude) so if you're afraid of seing a nude thing, don't click it ;)

  • Diane Thank you! :) I've not done the original sketch so I've kept the original proportions... I could have modified them though :)
    Thanks a lot!

Diane - Alien Girl
This one is an old and quick drawing done for a self portrait contest.
I've drawn myself as an alien girl with some Giger-like textures on the cheeks :)
A4 paper, 5 hours. 2B and 5B pencil

Diane

Diane - Blood Lover
This one is a self portrait as a vampire (inspired by the egyptian mythology...) . I've started it with a mirror but it was too long, so I've continued with a bad photo (not exactly the same pose, but it has been very useful for the shading).
I know it doesn't really look like a vampire at the first sight, but I'm a little bit tired of long pointy teeth, so this is my own version :)
No refs used for the hair, jewelry, snake....
18 hours
2H, 2B and 5B pencils
A4 paper

Hope you'll like it :)

Diane - Young King
The guy is the young king of a swamp tribe. He has some piercings and tattoos on his face showing his power. He has also the longest hair of the men of the tribe to claim his king status. He's wearing lots of snails shells (on his crown, clothes, necklace), symbol of his wisdom and perseverance...
I should stop writing stupid stories...

It has been done on the cheapest printer paper found in the supermarket so kill me for my lack of will (I didn't want to go to buy good paper... too lazy to walk out of my house).

A4 paper, 0,3mm HB mechanical pencil, 2B and 8B pencils, approx 30 hours.
The hardest part to do has been the blurry one! It had just killed me!
The upper part of the head looks very crappy because of the scan I've tried to fix it but it looks bad compared to the original.

  • Diane Thank you :) The top of the head looks better on the original drawing ;) The scan is crappy, actually... I couldn't manage to get a better reproduction :(

Diane - Mother Earth
This drawing represents Nature.... not much to say about it ;) I just wanted to do a detailed work with pencil. The model is Laetitia Casta, a French model and actress.

HB and 4B pencils on A4 paper
20 hours approx.
Contrast adjusted in Photoshop CS because of the bad scan.

Done listening to Depeche Mode "Playing the Angel" and Within Temptation "Mother Earth" ;)

Diane - Hair painting tutorial
This is a tutorial which explains my technique to paint hair.

I've made some mistakes writing it : it's the "dodge tool" instead of the "burn tool".
You can also use a round soft edged brush with opacity and shape set to pen pressure to place the first strands or hair, then start detailing them :)
The image on the tutorial is the first stage of my "Dreamcatcher" painting, so you can see how it can look after having worked enough on it :)
I hope it can be helpful!

  • Renyn Ok.. i kinda used that to "paint" hairs in Blue.Glow but... opacity was kinda killing me ~ Soo i wanted to know.. do you actually change opacity/flow during the time you paint or at 100% both all the time ? Cause its kinda hard to control opacity with only pen pressure.. even more when you only need a little fading ~

i know silly question hehe... thats why i don't paint.. im bad haha ~ peace

    Jul 26th, 2007
  • Diane I paint at 100 % all the time, but I'm very soft when I use the pen... You can change the pen settings to make it harder :)
It's really a matter of practise, I used to do awful hair at the beginning ^^

This is the second piece of my Elements serie : fire. The beautiful model is Rachael.
Photoshop CS and a wacom intuos 3A4, approx 35 hours (maybe more). Everything has been painted with a round hard edged brush. I've also used round soft brush for the glow.

Diane - Clathrus Ruber Nymph
This one is meant to be a part of a "witches herbs" serie I'm planning to do.
I've always been fascinated by a strange mushroom called Clathrus Ruber. It was meant to be used by witches some centuries ago because of it's strange aspect and because it's very smelly. This mushroom produces a very dark cream (that's the smelly part) that contains its seeds. This "cream" is eaten by green flies mostly, that's the reason why I've added flies on the "dress".
When I was a child, I thought that it was built by small forest creatures (I would not have admitted that it was ONLY a mushroom due to all the legends about it and due to its aspect) so I've wanted to represent what I was dreaming about. I can't really explain it as I would like since my english is not very good.
I think that I've spent 50 or 60 hours on it (I don't know exactly).
Photoshop CS and Wacom Intuos 3A4
The ref is linked in the WIP thread but I'm going to link it here too. I had picked some Solanum Dulcamara flowers in the forest then put them in a glass of water on my desktop to use them as a reference.

The whole progress can be viewed here : http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=363478

Diane - Poison Ivy
Hi people ! :)
Finally, I've finished my entry for the Poison Ivy Challenge runned by Pamzylove on deviantart.
I've spent a lot of time on it, I don't like this colour scheme so it has been very challenging. I must have redone the face and hands at least 500 times....
I hope you'll like it
Feel free to comment and crit! (I don't think that I'll edit it though, I'm tired of painting her...except for minor edits)
No reference used, except for the poison ivy leaves, I've at some photos of them using google image to see how they looked like.
The anatomy must be totally off but I've really tried... I'll do better next time
Photoshop CS2, wacom intuos 3A4
40 hours approx.
I must admit that I have a hair fetish....

Edit : I've fixed some little issues, it should look better now :)

His expression is so confident and, at the same time, he seems to be floating in the middle of nothing. Gives me the creeps... it's masterfully perfect. I love it.
