Geddy Lee: Rush trio pt 1

Geddy Lee, the lead singer, bass guitarist and keyboard player from the prog rock band Rush. I wanted to do something different than just a normal portrait, so this is the end result of what I came up with. All sorts going on here, there's his guitar on the metal studded wall, a keyboard hidden behind some clockwork and pipes and I drew Geddy as if it was a poster of him on the wall. The idea is inspired by their Time Machine tour they did a while ago. I will eventually draw the other two members of the band, with the same theme to match. The actual portrait of Geddy is only about 15cm x 16cm, less than half the size of A4. A4 (21cm x 29.7 cm) 220 gsm Winsor and Newton smooth cartridge paper. Various grades of pencil ranging up to 6B, HB & 2B mechanical pencils(0.5mm), tortillions, tissues, cotton buds and erasers.

This is a quick pastel drawing I did in a few hours. I decided to get my pastels out and started playing around with colours on a large piece of black card. The girl is roughly based on a stock photo by insomnia-stock on Deviantart - http://fav.me/d5hx122 Photo taken on my camera phone so the quality photo isn't as good as it could be. Soft pastels on black card, size is about 60cm x 32 cm (23 1/2 inch x 12 1/2 inch).

A drawing of the Actress Jessica Alba. I actually started this last year but kept putting it on hold. I'm glad to have it completed at last. I used various grades of pencil ranging from 5H to 5B, HB & 2B mechanical pencils(0.5mm), blending stumps, tissues, cotton buds and erasers. Nothing special about the paper, just 130gsm cartridge paper. Size is A3(42x29.7cm), had to scan it in two halves and piece it back together.

This is a portrait of a pet dog that I was asked to draw. It's been some time since I've drawn an animal and it was nice to draw something a bit different for a change. I really enjoyed doing this. It's drawn on A3 (42 x 29.7cm) 250gsm extra smooth Bristol board. I used various grades of pencil ranging from 4H to 5B, HB and 2B mechanical pencils (0.5mm), blending stumps, tissues, cotton buds, putty and normal erasers.

Keeping secrets. Lots of dark and black in this, I went through so much pencil lead doing it. It's a drawing I've been working on between doing some of my other larger drawings, finally got it finished. I based it on a photo reference from SaligiaStock on Deviantart - [link] I liked the contrast between the light and dark and thought it would make an interesting drawing. Size is A4 (210mm x 297mm) 220gsm smooth cartridge paper, HB and 2B 5mm mechanical pencil, various grades of pencil ranging from 4h to 5B, tissues, cotton buds, blending stumps and erasers.

My drawing of the Actress Eliza Dushku. This is one of the most detailed celebrity portraits that I’ve done. The necklace she’s wearing probably took longer to do than any other part of the drawing. It is definitely my favourite portrait that I have done. Drawn around August/September of 2010. I used HB and 2B 5mm mechanical pencil, HB 7mm mechanical pencil, various different grades of pencil ranging from 2H – 5B, blending stumps, tissues, kneaded and normal erasers, eraser pencil and lots of cups of tea. My drawing of Sarah Michelle Gellar – star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is one of my favourite portraits. I spent many hours working on it trying to make it as realistic as possible. This was drawn in March 2010, II originally drew this with a black border around it but I think it looks better shown without it. I used HB and 2B mechanical pencil 0.5mm, blending stumps, tissues, cotton buds, normal and kneaded erasers. Size is A4. Thought I would show you some of my celebrity portraits. This is a drawing of Scarlett Johansson that I drew around the middle of 2010. I aimed to make it detailed and realistic. I put a lot of time into drawing that white dress with all those ruffles. An A4 size drawing (297mm x 210mm). I used HB & 2B mechanical pencil, H2, & H4 pencil, many different kinds of eraser,blending stumps and tissues. Based on the British Sci Fi show. Featuring the 11th Doctor and his companions Amy Pond, Rory Williams, and River Song, along with two of his enemies, a Dalek and a Cyberman. Size is A3 (420mm x297mm).
