Otremar - The Book of Figaro

Concept:

Some years ago an idea came into my head: why not pick parts of the world I am lost in while dreaming to create my own fantasy world.

Now I have several 'glances' of this world picked in my sketchbook and this is my first illustration of this world, the world I call 'Otremar', the other sea. The inhabitants of this world don't believe in good and evil as we do, but in 'Essence' and 'Absence'. Simply spoken one might say 'Present' and 'Past and Future, not Present'.

It is said that only an innocent one might enter the library within the ruins of Kiliskant. A city to be told to have been founded where once an innocent child made the heaven cry, for it resembles an enormous tear just having hit the earth.

Figaro was the Master of the Shadows, Shadow of the Masters. Second to none in the art of manipulation, walking in the shadows and hiding. (I think, 'Figaro' fits for such a character's name for its similarity to 'fugare', latin word for 'flee').

But why does a child want a book so powerful?


And perhaps some 'glances' of this world might even inspire you just by reading this:
The Ninnerath - counsil of Nine, Nigoranth, Wingarh (we'd say 'dragon') of the East; ancient Levant-Stones; Elewyn, a main character; the store of 'Frunsbunsen and Deusenheuser', as said initially ... the ruins of Kiliskant ... and many a thing more ...

Nice to know:

I wonder what knowledge got lost by the fire of the Great Library of Alexandria and later on by the fall of the Roman Empire. Many books, many wisdom must have been lost. And I bet, some of it still might lurk in the cellars of the Vatican.



Technics:

After picking many references I created some rough drawings, which I used to illustrate this within Photoshop.
My usual technic is similar to airbrush. Masking the single elements (so I don't need to take that much care of the borders later on). Custom texture brushes increase the credibility. The original size would fit on a poster.
