Concept:
Inspired by games like The Witcher and scenes of Hugo Weaving as Elrond on the battlefield I created this hero called Maxim.
As my song to this illustration I picked
'Dimmu Borgir - Burn In Hell (Twisted Sister cover)'.
Hear no evil,
don't you see no evil,
don't you lay no evil
down on me.
Speak no evil,
don't you think no evil,
don't you play with evil,
'cause I'm free.
Nice to know:
Did you know that in most cases fighting with a sword on a battlefield was over after about three strikes?
A sword having some edges at its blade is very vulnerable and might break easily.
Technics:
After picking many references I created some rough drawings, which I used to illustrate this within Photoshop.
My usual technic is similar to airbrush. Masking the single elements (so I don't need to take that much care of the borders later on). Custom texture brushes increase the credibility. The original size would fit on a poster.
