Delirium, or acute confusional state, is a syndrome that presents as severe confusion and disorientation, developing with relatively rapid onset and fluctuating in intensity. It is a syndrome which occurs more frequently in people in their later years. Delirium represents an organically caused decline from a previously-attained baseline level of cognitive function. It is typified by fluctuating course, attentional deficits and generalized severe disorganization of behavior. It typically involves other cognitive deficits, changes in arousal (hyperactive, hypoactive, or mixed), perceptual deficits, altered sleep-wake cycle, and psychotic features such as hallucinations and delusions. Delirium itself is not a disease, but rather a clinical syndrome (a set of symptoms), which result from an underlying disease, from medications administered during treatment of that disease in a critical phase or from a new problem with mentation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Personal Note to Self* This is what my Mother experienced over the last few years as a result of her facial surgery that accelerated her current condition of dementia which she was just diagnosed with this last Friday by her physician. My Sister has been patient and sometimes frustrated as I have over these past few years, but love and honoring your parents is something we all have to do in life no matter what the cause. My Sister & I found her final nurse assisted care facility yesterday that is closer to friends and myself. She will probably have a little trouble accepting the move on the count of she won't be able to bring all of her personal belongings just her clothes and during Memorial Day Weekend, I will be cleaning her old apartment up.
